Ambient Sounds from the Street

I recorded these ambient sounds of the street along North Oakland Ave. I played around with different techniques of ways to capture the sounds of the street. In the clip I have posted I was holding the mics in each hand and rotated them side to side in hopes of capturing a unique sound. It actually creates a series of up and down levels of noise.

Drip-Drop Water Drops

This sound came from water dropping off of the roof of a motel on East Capitol Dr. It was a subtle sound that actually caught my ear after standing in the same spot for a while. I looked to see what the patting sound was that I could faintly hear and it was coming from the roof of the motel and landing on the brick of a retaining wall creating a patting sound much like a primitive sort of drum.

Singing Sewer

Acquired sound from a manhole on North Frederick Ave. I encountered many water sounds throughout my drift however, I found this specific sewer noise to be different and unique from all the others. The echoing, distant aspect of this sound is what appealed to me and caused me to record and include it in my drift.

Family O' Birds

I obtained this recording of a family of birds on East Beverly Rd. I started recording a ways down the street but the sound seemed too faint to my pleasing so I went on to see if I could get a closer sound. I ventured as close as I could without scaring the birds. It took me a while to get a good recording of the birds with them chirping for a longer length of time.

Audio from an Airplane

I stopped to record the noise an airplane was creating flying overhead. The airplane sound may appear to sound distant; I was intrigued by the sound of the engine of the airplane creating a sort of subtle "wah" sound. This was actually one of the first sounds that I recorded on my drift.

Drift Strategy

On this drift I chose to use a zig-zag approach. I started on Maryland Ave. until I hit the next street which was Edgewood Ave. and proceeded left. At the next street I then turned right then left on the next and so on. I diverted form my walking pattern once I walked a while on Capitol Dr. and started back tracking until Oakland Ave. and walked that street until the end of my drift.
